KPWR Power 106 FM is the number one hip hop radio station in LA and according to BDS (Nielsen Broadcast Data System); it is the leading rhythmic contemporary formatted radio station in the US. Though the station gravitates towards hip hop music, it constantly makes conscious efforts of extending its music mix to stay on top of the competition and appease its core audience–consisting of youth and young adults ages 12-34, including the Hispanic listeners. POWER 106′s radio personalities these days are mostly Latinos with the exception of Big Boy and Fuzzy Fantabulous who are both African-Americans. Big Boy (Kurt Alexander) hosts the station’s most prominent show known as Big Boy’s Neighborhood. It is considered as the funniest show in the Southland and airs on weekdays from 5AM-10AM. Big Boy is also the station’s most distinguished personality; received four Personality of the Year honors from Radio Music Awards and three from Radio and Records magazine, won two Marconi Awards and have appeared in various movies and TV shows.
POWER 106 also featured brilliant MCs and disc jockeys in its Promotion Team known as the Flava Unit. Notable members include DJ J-Boogie (host of “CW Now”, “Yo Momma” on MTV and “TeeNick” on Nickelodeon), Mando Fresko (host of LATV, actor and model) and DJ Virman (one of the founders of the Electropop/Hip hop group Far East Movement). With the emphasis on quality beats, entertaining shows and the fusion of great talents; POWER 106 is without a doubt where hip hop truly lives amongst LA radio stations.
